Jair Bolsonaro has been detained after authorities found he posed a definite escape threat while under domestic detention.
The former head of state was sentenced of planning a armed takeover in the ninth month and sentenced more than 27 years in jail, but he remained under home detention pending court reviews.
Brazilian Supreme Court Justice Justice Moraes said the decision to arrest the elderly politician was a preventative measure after "new facts" emerged.
This involved seeking to disable his tracking device and a invitation to a demonstration that could enable a possible escape.
Court Filing Details Flight Fears
In a document approving the arrest, Justice Moraes said data from the centre monitoring his home detention suggested the one-time head of state's aim to disable the surveillance device to secure accomplishment in his getaway".
This, it said, would be assisted by the chaos caused by the gathering called by his son.
His offspring, Flávio, who serves as a legislator, called for a assembly of his followers near his father's house to take place on Saturday night.
His son wrote on digital networks on last Friday: "Are you going to fight for your homeland, or observe everything from your phone there on your couch? I call on you to struggle with us."
He said the vigil would be so followers could offer prayers for his health and for the restoration of democratic rule in our country."
Diplomatic Refuge Fears
Part of Justice Moraes's ruling was the chance of his "relocation to foreign missions near the home, considering that the investigations revealed a history of organizing to seek refuge through a consular facility", a declaration said.
The court filing highlights that the American diplomatic mission in the federal district, Brazil's capital, is located around 8 miles from the former president's residence.
International Reactions
His judicial problems have generated frustration from fellow conservative nationalist American leader Trump, prompting him to enact a fifty percent tax on imports of Brazilian goods.
The former president is being held in a federal law enforcement building in the capital and will have a custody hearing on the following day.
Recent Legal Requests
It was only on last Friday that the former president's lawyers asked the High Court to authorize him to fulfill his full incarceration period under home confinement, with electronic monitoring.
They also asked that Bolsonaro be authorized to exit his dwelling for medical treatment, saying he demanded ongoing care for lung conditions and other illnesses.
Background on Conviction
He was found guilty of orchestrating a scheme aimed at retaining his authority after he failed to win the presidential race to his political opponent, President Lula.
High Court judges said that he had knowledge of a plan which included plans to assassinate his opponent and his VP candidate, Geraldo Alckmin, and to imprison and murder Justice Moraes - the High Court judge who has been presiding over Bolsonaro's trial.
The plot was stopped because it couldn't obtain the backing of the armed forces officials. His successor was took office without incident on the first day of 2023.
But a following week, on 8 January, thousands of his backers stormed and vandalised government buildings in the federal district, the capital city.
The security forces stepped in and around approximately 1,500 persons were arrested.
The magistrates found that the rioters had been incited by him whose strategy, they said, was for the Brazilian military to step in, bring back stability and bring him back to power.
At the moment, his attorneys called the 27 years and three months sentence unreasonably severe".
He was also banned from seeking elected position until the year 2060 - a decade minus two years after the end of his sentence.
The former president called the court case a targeted investigation" and said it was designed to prevent him running in the 2026 presidential election.
