Weather balloons transporting a large quantity of cigarettes have disrupted flights in Lithuania, as Vilnius Airport was required to halt operations for hours when multiple of them drifted across the national airspace.
Flight Disruptions
The operational halt led to the cancellation of 30 flights affecting thousands of passengers, with airport representatives alerting that delays might continue throughout Monday.
Law Enforcement Actions
Border security stated that 25 meteorological balloons were spotted infiltrating Lithuania from the border with Belarus, with two balloons ending up right above the main terminal.
Approximately 14 of the atmospheric instruments deployed throughout the weekend drifted across the Vilnius area, which is home to Lithuania's main urban center and adjacent to the border with Belarus.
Illegal Goods Seizure
A minimum of 11 balloons containing numerous containers of black-market cigarettes have been collected so far, though more recoveries are anticipated, according to customs agents.
Cross-Border Contraband Trend
Although causing problems, officials emphasized that "Balloons with contraband - tobacco products originating in Belarus - are nothing new in Lithuania, Latvia, and Poland."
To date in the current year, over five hundred weather devices have been recorded entering Lithuania from Belarus, while 966 were recorded last year.
Neighboring Country Impact
Simultaneously, the north-eastern Polish territory, which also borders Belarus, has recorded more than numerous instances in which illegal goods were transported from its adjacent country employing the balloons.
Illegal Transport Methods
In response to questions about why criminals use a method that is particularly vulnerable to weather factors rather than simpler to operate drones, authorities explained that "Meteorological balloons are basic instruments used by contraband transporters - they are more economical than drones for carrying smoking materials from Belarus."
Security Service Goals
Representatives further stated that "The goal of law enforcement is to confiscate the maximum possible quantities of contraband and to arrest masterminds and participants so that this activity become not financially viable and present no risk to civil aviation."
International Concerns
The recent incidents occur during an era marked by growing anxiety in Europe following various aerial device infiltrations that have resulted in flight interruptions across the region.
Parallel situations in adjacent nations have caused EU officials to fast-track conversations about improving airspace protection throughout the region.
