Conservative responses to the partial disclosure of files involving the Jeffrey Epstein case have been mixed, with some supporters of the previous administration highlighting the prominent appearance of former President Clinton and additional Democratic figures in photographs, while others lamented how extensive censorship portray Donald Trump and Republicans in a negative light.
Justice Department Justifies Redactions with Fervent Rhetoric
Justice Department representatives justified the heavily censored sections with fervent exaggerated language. “Never in American history has a President or the Justice Department been so transparent with the public about such a delicate law enforcement issue,” stated Deputy Attorney General Todd Blanche, who released a six-page letter describing the redaction procedure.
Questions Prompted by Blacked-Out Sections
While Trump's identity and likeness appear in some of the materials, the widespread redactions prompt significant concerns about the information may be hidden behind them. A number of conservative lawmakers immediately demanded increased openness.
“People are furious and disengaging,” posted Republican Congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Greene.
In a social media post, GOP Kentucky Thomas Massie said the censorship break the statute, and suggested that a future Congress may attempt to impeach the Attorney General, Pam Bondi, for that offense. “Unfortunately, this file dump egregiously fails to adhere to both the intent and the wording of the law,” he continued.
Some Conservative Commentators Rally In Support of the Disclosure
But, some rightwing commentators and former President loyalists came out strongly behind the administration.
The release—originating from a DOJ run by key Trump associate Pam Bondi—contains hundreds of pages that are completely censored, and numerous of the men shown in photographs have their identities obscured.
But some are not, including prominent individuals like Bill Clinton, pop singer Michael Jackson, and academic Noam Chomsky. The inclusion of Clinton, especially, allowed certain conservative voices to go on the attack.
“This is pretty rich how the political left falsely claimed President Trump of associating with a sex offender, only for the administration's Justice Department to release Epstein files that depict Bill Clinton skinny dipping with a pedophile,” wrote conservative activist Laura Loomer.
“Recently released Epstein Files show Bill Clinton without a shirt in a jacuzzi with a woman that is not his wife Hillary Clinton,” posted lawyer Rogan O’Handley. “There’s only 1 reason Epstein would photograph a Commander-in-Chief with a girl in a hot tub: Blackmail.”
Clinton Campaign Issues Statement
Bill Clinton has consistently stated he knew of zero criminal actions by Epstein and has never been accused to have participated in any misconduct. “The White House hasn’t been hiding these files for months only to release them late on a weekend to protect Bill Clinton,” his representative Angel Ureña stated in a statement.
“The release is about protecting officials from what comes next, or from information they’ll try and conceal permanently. So they can publicize as many grainy 20-plus-year-old photos as they desire, but it is not about Bill Clinton. Not previously, never will be,” the statement added.
Overall Conservative Commentary Remains Muted
However, broader comment on the right was relatively subdued after the release, especially when compared with the loud demands for action that came before the legislative vote to pass a law requiring the files' publication.
Loomer, who recently accepted press credentials at the Defense Department, had been one of the loudest advocates for a complete disclosure. Earlier this year, she chastised the Justice Department generally and Bondi specifically after a group of rightwing influencers were given hard-copy folders of files that included little new data.
